Has Street Style Had it's Day?

Is street style as inspiration losing it's touch? The Sunday Times pointed out that many extroverts go out of their way to be photographed at Fashion Week by going dressed outrageously, playing on the shock factor in order to get the attention of street style photographers. Because of this farce, is it possible that street style is now becoming redundant as a valid form of inspiration, to see what's bubbling up? Are these individuals contaminating "real" street style?

Alex Fury of Love Magazine dubbed this exhibition of fashion "about as sophisticated as a toddler exposing themselves on a jungle gym". It seems that many individuals dress this way for the attention, and not for their love of fashion as a whole. They do the laps around Somerset house waiting for someone to stop them to take their photo whilst acting as if they had better things to do in the first place - those who've been observing them for the last hour know this is simply not true. You go to Fashion Week to be a spectator, not to be spectated. It's this that separates the true individuals from those who are attention-seeking (not that there is ever anything wrong with wanting attention anyway). The former truly outshine the others.

To me, fashion is very fluid as peoples perceptions of 'style' vary. It's very much opinion based, what some people might find ghastly others might find innovative. After all, what is fashion without anybody pushing the boundaries? Where would we be without outrageous visionaries such as Leigh Bowery and Vivienne Westwood? They shocked thousands yet without them we would be without so much intrigue. It would be a terribly dull industry if style was a pair of skinny jeans and a leather jacket.  Fashion is allowed to be playful, it's an expression of oneself. It's entertainment.

I say, let these people have their moment of dressing the way they do. If it's true to themselves then they will continue to dress that way - photographers about or no photographers. It's the street-style photographers job to realise what is a cry for attention and what is true style. Whilst what they wear might not be considered stylish it's still a spectacle and people will still look. I think photographing at somewhere like Fashion Week you are asking for people to be showing off for the cameras, I think true street style comes from the streets of London on any average day. Think Brick Lane, Camden, Shoreditch, Dalston, and Soho. These are where the true individuals will shine through!
